Worship Service
Sunday, January 17

Introduction:
All the baptized have a calling in God's world. God calls not just pastors and deacons but also the youngest child, like Samuel. The story of the calling of Nathanael plays with the idea of place. Nathanael initially dismisses Jesus because he comes from Nazareth. But where we come from isn't important; it's where—or rather whom—we come to. Jesus refers to Jacob, who had a vision in a place he called "the house of God, and . . . the gate of heaven" (Gen. 28:17). Jesus says he himself is the place where Nathanael will meet God.

Prayer of the Day:
Thanks be to you, Lord Christ, most merciful redeemer, for the countless blessings and benefits you give. May we know you more clearly, love you more dearly, and follow you more nearly, day by day praising you, with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Haggai 1
1 In the second year of King Darius, on the first day of the sixth month, the word of the Lord came through the prophet Haggai to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua son of Jozadak,[a] the high priest:
2 This is what the Lord Almighty says: “These people say, ‘The time has not yet come to rebuild the Lord’s house.’”
3 Then the word of the Lord came through the prophet Haggai: 4 “Is it a time for you yourselves to be living in your paneled houses, while this house remains a ruin?”
5 Now this is what the Lord Almighty says: “Give careful thought to your ways. 6 You have planted much, but harvested little. You eat, but never have enough. You drink, but never have your fill. You put on clothes, but are not warm. You earn wages, only to put them in a purse with holes in it.”
7 This is what the Lord Almighty says: “Give careful thought to your ways. 8 Go up into the mountains and bring down timber and build my house, so that I may take pleasure in it and be honored,” says the Lord.9 “You expected much, but see, it turned out to be little. What you brought home, I blew away. Why?” declares the Lord Almighty. “Because of my house, which remains a ruin, while each of you is busy with your own house. 10 Therefore, because of you the heavens have withheld their dew and the earth its crops. 11 I called for a drought on the fields and the mountains, on the grain, the new wine, the olive oil and everything else the ground produces, on people and livestock, and on all the labor of your hands.”
12 Then Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, Joshua son of Jozadak, the high priest, and the whole remnant of the people obeyed the voice of the Lord their God and the message of the prophet Haggai, because the Lord their God had sent him. And the people feared the Lord.
13 Then Haggai, the Lord’s messenger, gave this message of the Lord to the people: “I am with you,” declares the Lord. 14 So the Lord stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua son of Jozadak, the high priest, and the spirit of the whole remnant of the people. They came and began to work on the house of the Lord Almighty, their God, 15 on the twenty-fourth day of the sixth month.
The Promised Glory of the New HouseIn the second year of King Darius, 2 1 on the twenty-first day of the seventh month, the word of the Lord came through the prophet Haggai: 2 “Speak to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, to Joshua son of Jozadak,[a] the high priest, and to the remnant of the people. Ask them, 3 ‘Who of you is left who saw this house in its former glory? How does it look to you now? Does it not seem to you like nothing? 4 But now be strong, Zerubbabel,’ declares the Lord. ‘Be strong, Joshua son of Jozadak, the high priest. Be strong, all you people of the land,’ declares the Lord, ‘and work. For I am with you,’ declares the Lord Almighty. 5 ‘This is what I covenanted with you when you came out of Egypt. And my Spirit remains among you. Do not fear.’
6 “This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘In a little while I will once more shake the heavens and the earth, the sea and the dry land. 7 I will shake all nations, and what is desired by all nations will come, and I will fill this housewith glory,’ says the Lord Almighty. 8 ‘The silver is mine and the gold is mine,’ declares the Lord Almighty. 9 ‘The glory of this present house will be greater than the glory of the former house,’ says the Lord Almighty. ‘And in this place I will grant peace,’ declares the Lord Almighty.”
20 The word of the Lord came to Haggai a second time on the twenty-fourth day of the month: 21 “Tell Zerubbabel governor of Judah that I am going to shake the heavens and the earth. 22 I will overturn royal thrones and shatter the power of the foreign kingdoms. I will overthrow chariots and their drivers; horses and their riders will fall, each by the sword of his brother.
23 “‘On that day,’ declares the Lord Almighty, ‘I will take you, my servant Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel,’ declares the Lord, ‘and I will make you like my signet ring, for I have chosen you,’ declares the Lord Almighty.”

Reflection Questions
1.  What do you think is the main concern of the prophet, Haggai, in this writing?
2.  Do any of the images used remind you of anything else from the Bible or elsewhere?
3.  How can you tell what is central to someone’s life?
4.  What is the value of doing physical labor in time’s of stress?  ie.  I clean floors with toothbrushes :)
5.  What is the role of community in this lesson?

Weekly Musical Recommendations
from Linda Jakubowski, RLC's Director of Music

Here is a beautiful arrangement of an iconic song.  It reminds me of simpler times, when we had time to ponder the more basic questions of the human experience. “Both Sides Now”,  sung by Josh Groban and Kelli O’hara w/ the New York Philharmonic.

We all have days when we feel life has let us down, we can’t do the things we want.  Here are some young people who looked life in the eye and said, “Oh yes I can.  Just watch me!”  They figured it out, and didn’t hold back.  A good lesson for all of us.

This is a new group, called RESOUND.  Here they sing “The Prayer”.  Pastor Mary reminded us on Sunday to reach out not only to those who are our friends and think like us, but to those who think differently.  To remember that we all belong to God’s Kingdom.  What a great message to start off the new year!

Here’s another piece by RESOUND.  Had to include this for Mike Marlin.  “Go Tell It on the Mountain”
This is a virtual collaboration presented by Jawn Murray and friends.  We need to remember that we aren’t alone.  Don’t be afraid to pick up the phone and call someone.  Let them know how much their friendship means to you.  They’ll appreciate it more than you know.   “That’s What Friends Are For”.

NOTE FROM THE WEBMASTER: These videos are linked to YouTube.  RLC has no control over ads that may play at the beginning of the clips, so please select "SKIP AD" when and where appropriate.  Additionally, we have no control over or can take no responsibility for content in clips that follow these musical selections - PLEASE ENJOY!

ALL ARE WELCOME!

For over 50 years, Resurrection Lutheran Church has fostered a diverse family atmosphere of Christian celebration and fellowship.  RLC is all-welcoming and is a Reconciling in Christ
congregation.  We're affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America and the Greater Milwaukee Synod of ELCA.

What makes RLC so special to it's members and guests is the welcoming environment and the leadership of our long-term Pastor, the Rev. Dr. Mary Ubuntu.  Under Pastor Mary's spiritual guidance, RLC has continued to evolve into a place of worship, nurture and outreach.

At RLC, you'll find a richly diverse tapestry of members from couples to singles all the way to multi-generational families, including children.  As an open and affirming family, everyone is welcome at our home at 124th Street and Coldspring Road.

We'd love to welcome you to our home and family for a Sunday morning service, a special event, a holiday service, or a lifetime of Christian celebration!

Love [& RLC] Has No Labels.

We affirm, with the apostle Paul, that in Christ, "there is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male or female. Christ has made us one." (Galatians 3:28)

RLC welcomes all and believes in diversity. Diversity is the range of human differences, including but not limited to race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, social class, physical ability or attributes, religious or ethical values system, national origin, and political beliefs.  ALL ARE WELCOME HERE!
We are a Reconciling in Christ Congregation.

Beyond diversity though, RLC also practices inclusion. Inclusion is involvement and empowerment, where the inherent worth and dignity of all people are recognized. An inclusive congregation promotes and sustains a sense of belonging; it values and practices respect for the talents, beliefs, backgrounds, and ways of living of its members and its partners.
Diversity is being invited to the party.  Inclusion is being asked to dance."

Our Mission:
Celebrating God’s Grace
through Worship, Nurture & Outreach.

The ‘church’ is God’s people who believe that they are redeemed by Jesus Christ and serve Him daily through their lives with love for our neighbors.  The church is where God’s people gather to receive Him through His means of grace which we celebrate through the Gospel, baptism, Holy Communion, prayer, fellowship, and mission.

We daily affirm that Christ lives in each person throughout the world for we are all one in Christ.
